The leading causes of tramping fatalities in New Zealand stem from competence issues. These include ‘Lack of experience’, ‘Incorrect gear’, and an underestimation of track difficulty. New Zealand's tramping visitor numbers are increasing, and with that, an inexperienced tramping user group is expected to rise, resulting in an increase in fatalities and search and rescue operations.

This project aims to enhance tramper safety in New Zealand and reduce fatalities on walking tracks by offering an effective emergency shelter solution.
